Political Flags Collection
It is tempting to think that the rancorous presidential campaign of 2016 was the nastiest in American history, but a look at the 67 carefully preserved block-printed cotton and silk flags in the Shenkman Collection suggests otherwise. Almost all of the flags in this collection date before 1912, when the country adopted an official flag design. That means that these flags offer a glimpse of a time when creative freedom was still largely intact. That creative freedom explains the array of differing shades of red and blue, star configurations, and proportions of stars to stripes in these flags.
In the Shenkman Collection, one of the earliest is the tattered 21-star “Grand Luminary” flag used for just a year after Illinois joined the Union; another is the 26-star “Star of Minnesota” flag made upon that state’s admission to the Union in 1837. And yet another, the coveted 32-star flag created upon the admittance of Michigan in 1858, quickly became a 34-star version as demand soared during the Civil War.
The collection also contains a flag that was documented to be used by President Kennedy during his 1963 trip to Texas—one of the very few presidential automobile flags in existence. It is, as Shenkman puts it, a testament to Kennedy’s desire to appear accessible to the American people. This sentiment is echoed in the collection’s most somber object—a pair of red flags soaked in calf’s blood used by marchers at the Merthyr Rising of 1831 in South Wales. This symbol of workers’ power inspired the fist and rose design that was later used by socialist and communist parties in Europe.
